Home made butter

The school holidays have been very full with swimming lessons, activities in the home, fights over who gets to use the computer and the usual sibling fights.
The dust storm was gone by morning on Wednesday, but we are awaiting our next one within a few hours.
It hasn't made the place very nice. Mum has asthma and the little ones are spreading the dust through the house and up the walls. Big clean up week next week.
We have been busy thinking of blog posts and have about 5 to share when we get the chance.

We had 12 300ml bottles of cream in the fridge this week.
Cream on scones, cream on breaky, cream in hot chocolate.
That took up 3 bottles of cream.
With the rest about to expire i thought we would have a go at making butter (and butter milk)
Bring the cream to room temp then pour into a jar.
Shake it about with all your might and have lots of helpers.
It becomes thick then all of a sudden goes sloshy as the fat separates from the liquid.
This way gave us very light fluffy butter.

The rest of the cream went into the mixer.
Pour it in turn it on and watch it change.

You have to squeeze out all the liquid as it can make the butter go sour.
When you have as much liquid as you can get out of it, wash in cold water then mold into butter dish.
The buttermilk is way better than store bought and has been used in replace of milk in cake recipes.
Delish!

Thanks for all the butter making instructions! I've been meaning to try it for a while now, think I might have a go today! (Thought I think I might go for the mixer option rather than all that shaking!)
